Une recherche a été effectuée sur Medline pour sélectionner des articles concernant la sédation chez des patients en phase terminale ; son but est la recherche de critères de définition pour ce terme. L'analyse de 7 documents est présentée en commentaire et sous forme de tableaux : elle porte sur les termes employés pour définir la sédation, les facteurs incluant des définitions sur ce mot, une proposition de définition sur la sédation dans les soins palliatifs. Cette revue montre deux facteurs principaux retrouvés : présence de douleurs rebelles et soulagement de la détresse, qui pourraient être utilisés comme critères de définition. Selon les auteurs, la clarification de cette terminologie devrait être affinée et permettre une amélioration de la recherche sur la sédation.
