Drifting over the horizon : navigating the end-of-life journey

Article indépendant

GRUENEWALD, David Allan

Mom has good days and bad days. It’s as if she’s in a boat floating on a tide, sometimes closer, sometimes farther away. Over time, the boat is drifting farther out, and tonight she seems literally lost at sea. Her nurse at the facility calls me; my mother is agitated. “I’m on the ferry. I need to get to Vashon Heights.” She needs my help making it into the dock. It is no use trying to reorient her to her surroundings. Eventually, we agree that she is having a difficult evening and that the best thing is to try and go to bed and rest, and we’ll see how things look in the morning.
