Medical futility as a cause of suffering of dying patients : the family members' perspective = La futilité médicale, cause de souffrance chez les mourants : perception des membres de la famille

La notion de futilité médicale, anglo-saxonne, signifie l'application de traitements que l'on sait d'emblée inutile. Elle est proche de celle d'acharnement thérapeutique. Cette étude finoise montre à la fois que ces traitements sont encore souvent mis en place chez des patients en fin de vie et souligne la souffrance qu'ils entraînent chez les malades et leur famille. La méthodologie consiste à considérer un échantillon de 490 malades et de questionner la famille des patients après leur mort. Un quart des répondants restitue une souffrance liée à ces traitements "futiles" et parmi eux, 21% mettent en cause principalement les médicaments.
