Buprenorphine : applications in oncology and palliative care
Article
Pain is a frequent symptom reported by people with cancer. As a result of advances in cancer treatments, patients are living longer with chronic pain syndromes. Because of the opioid epidemic, many clinicians have been hesitant to regularly prescribe opioids because of concerns for misuse, opioid use disorder, and overdose. Buprenorphine, a synthetic opioid, is an effective analgesic and treatment for opioid use disorder with a favorable adverse effect profile. Clinicians are using buprenorphine more often for cancer-related pain, which requires oncology advanced practice nurses to be familiar with its use.
