In 2016 I took a leap of faith and, after 11 years as a registered nurse in intensive care, stood for election to be a member of the House of Keys, the parliament of the Isle of Man. The topic of physician assisted dying came up during the election campaign, and I needed to determine my manifesto position given our political system of largely independent representatives. The local campaigner Millie Blenkinsop-French had kept the topic at the front of the public’s mind, and it was raised both on the doorstep and at public hustings. Robust discourse around assisted dying will undoubtedly lead to better, safer legislation, and health professionals should be central to this conversation. [Extrait article opinion]
