This Fast Fact discusses nutrition management for patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), which is a progressive and eventually fatal neurodegenerative disease. Each year, 5000 patients in the United States receive a new diagnosis of ALS. Bulbar muscle weakness is a common manifestation and can lead to dysphagia, weight loss, and clinical dilemmas regarding the pursuit of enteral nutrition.
