Virtually grounded

ZYGOWIEC, Jonathan

Sitting on the floor in my living room wearing a large virtual reality headset, I am transported to the top of a mountain overlook. Perched on the edge, I can look out at the vastness and beauty. I can hear the birds. I can see the movement of the water in the valley below. And I can almost sense the breeze against my face as it moves the tree line in the distance. Turning my head and taking in the view, I pause. For at that moment, I am not a 40-year-old father doing my best to stay alive for my 3 boys. I am not sitting in a chair for my weekly chemotherapy infusions. I am not lying in bed feeling the effects of those drugs coursing through my body—both helping and damaging at once. I am not standing in front of the mirror looking at the scars of prior surgeries. For at that moment, I am not a patient with stage IV colorectal cancer.
