In population studies, adults with more psychosocial vulnerability and stressors have higher mortality, rehospitalization rates, and functional decline following a life stressor such as major surgery. However, developing and studying an intervention to address psychosocial stress on operative outcomes is hindered by insufficient data about the types of stresses these patients face. To help address this gap, we performed a qualitative content analysis of palliative care provider notes for patients scheduled to undergo major cancer operations.
