Principles of pediatric palliative surgical oncology : a guide to palliative care for pediatric surgeons
Article
Pediatric surgical oncologists play an essential role in the complex care of children with cancer. To provide high-quality, goal-concordant care, pediatric surgeons can integrate principles of primary pediatric palliative care into their practice. The American Pediatric Surgical Association’s Cancer Committee proposes seven principles to assist pediatric surgeons in the delivery of holistic care to children with cancer and their families: respecting patient and family values, using effective communication strategies, providing expert symptom management, committing to longitudinal care, participating in collaborative practice, referring to subspecialty palliative care when needed, and enhancing provider resilience. We then provide guidance on integrating these principles into training, research, and system-level support.
