Depuis l’Antiquité, le fait de prendre part à la souffrance d’autrui donne lieu à deux jugements moraux, l’un favorable, qui fait de la compassion un signe d’amour, l’autre défavorable, qui voit dans la pitié un signe de mépris. Mais aujourd’hui, le refus de compatir se présente comme la caractéristique des êtres inhumains. Pourquoi en sommes-nous arrivés là ? Il faut procéder à la généalogie de l’universalisation du rapport compassionnel pour comprendre comment et pourquoi, au cours des Temps modernes, la compassion est devenue la vertu d’humanité par excellence.. From one compassion to an other Ever since Antiquity, the fact of joining in the suffering of others has given rise to two moral judgements. One is favourable, seeing compassion as a sign of love ; the other is unfavourable and sees pity as a sign of contempt. But nowadays the refusal of compassion has shown itself to be characteristic of inhuman beings. How have we reached this point ? We need to look into the genealogy of the process which has universalized the compassionate relationship, in order to understand how and why, in modern times, compassion has become the virtue of humanity par excellence.
