Random field effects in a disordered metamagnet: magnetic domains and their dynamics

International audience. The low temperature (H, T) magnetic phase diagram of the dilute Ising antiferromagnet Fe0.8Mg0.2Cl2 has been determined. A strong time-dependent magnetic hysteresis on mixed phase boundaries is evidenced and is analyzed from the magneto-optical imaging of the evolution of the magnetic domain pattern. This behaviour is attributed to random fields creating a metastable mesoscopic multidomain antiferromagnetic state.
