Impact of ambient temperature in powerchair football players

International audience. Background. - Powerchair football is a team sport for people with a heavy motor disability. It is played in a sports hall with a specific power wheelchair, which makes it easier to move around and kick the ball. For powerchair football players, muscle activation heat is limited. Method. - The study looked into the playing conditions of powerchair football in French clubs to assess the impact of the hall temperature on the players' performances. From case studies, we checked if the player's muscle activation during a game produces peripheral cutaneous thermogenesis that would allow mechanisms of homeostasis. Survey information showed that the ambient temperature at practice is not sufficient (17,7 +/- 1,7 degrees C) compared to that expected ( 21,1 +/- 2,1 degrees C). No matter their classification, 81% of players consider that the cold has a negative impact on their performance and many warming techniques have to be used. During simulated games, recordings of skin temperature with the use of temperature recorders on the back of the hand of 4 players showed a tendency to local thermolysis. Using a hair dryer a quick short-term temperature increase, less than a half-time on the game (+13,9 and 16,4 degrees C in 4-5 min), was obtained. Conclusion. - It is concluded that the ambient temperature of sports halls that are too cold coulda limiting factor to control the wheelchair control and player's sensibility. Muscle activationappears to be insufficient to produce a local thermogenesis and does not make up for thelaminar effect of the wind created by the players' movements on the pitch. Widely used, thetechnique of heating by a hair dryer could be a quick and effective solution but its effect isnot lasting over the period of play.
