International audience. Featured Application: The evaluation of the behavior of cultured cells on substrates with con-trolled topographies can contribute significantly to the optimization of biomaterials for bioen-gineering, due to the fact that cells are able to recognize topographies at different length scales and be influenced by them. This review aims to bring together studies in the field that identify important molecular factors involved in this mechanism. In the case of osteoblasts, specific surface topographies of biomaterials used as bone grafts could lead to a fast recovery of bone defects associated to expected tissue homeostasis. In this review we have brought up the present knowledge on the interaction of osteoblasts with different substrates and we ex-pect that its content can help in future design of the next generation of materials for bone en-gineeringThis article is an open access article distributed under the terms and conditions of the Creative Commons Attribution (CC BY
