Potential of filamentous fungi to degrade PAHS in industrial polluted soils

The aims of our studies are the development of tools to screen fungal efficiency for PAH transformation, to inoculate polluted soils with the fungi, and to assay PAH degradation in soils and liquid media in the presence of selected fungi.The biodegradation of phenanthrene and benzo[a]pyrene in mixture was assayed in liquid and wet sand cultures in the presence of filamentous fungi. Wet sand, a triphasic sceening system constituting a model of soil, decreased chemical volatilization and gave a more realistic image of fungal degradation than liquid cultures.Solid lignocellulosic carriers have been developped from agricultural by-products in order to inoculate filamentous fungi in industrial PAH-polluted soils.PAH transformation in soils was then measured in solid phase reactors inoculated with the carriers overgrown by the fungi.Finally, fungal biomass, enzyme activity and PAH degradation was assessed in liquid reactors inoculated with the fungi to degrade liquid effluents.
