Bacterial Adherence to Plant and Animal Surfaces Via Adhesin-Lipid Interactions

International audience. The plasma membrane acts as one of the first lines of defense by establishing aphysical barrier against microbes. Nevertheless, bacteria have developed a rangeof strategies to invade the host tissues efficiently. In this chapter, we focus on thisunderstudied area and describe how bacteria target or redirect host membrane lipids. Domains enriched in sterols and sphingolipids, denominated membranerafts, in particular, have been reported to be exploited by numerous bacterialpathogens. We will first describe the different strategies employed by bacteria tospecifically target the PM via membrane rafts and non-raft counterpart domains;and secondly, we illustrate how development of biomimetic membranes hasidentified bacterial mechanisms of interaction.
