A closed-loop insulin delivery requires a control algorithm particularly robust to meal-induced disturbances. Error Dynamics Shaping (EDS), an original nonlinear control method, has been already successfully tested in silico for IV route with Bergman minimal model (ATTD 2009). Here our aims are to design a controller suitable for SC route with EDS and to evaluate its performances using the FDA approved UVa T1DM simulator based on Dalla Man et al model. The EDS controller was tested on four type 1 diabetes adults from the UVaT1DM simulator database, during three days including three daily meals at 6 am, noon and 7 pm (50, 90 and 80 grams carbohydrates). The controller does not require any information about meal-time and CHO content. In the four patients, the glucose concentration always remained within 70-175 mg/dl. The mean time spent within 75-150 mg/dl was 90% (range: 76% - 100%). No hypoglycaemia (< 70 mg/dl) occurred and the highest glucose concentration (175 mg/dl) was observed in a single patient after lunch. The EDS controller demonstrates its efficiency for SC route using the UVa T1DM simulator. Our results highlight its potential robustness against meal disturbances, without the need for meal announcement.
