Value of and value in language : ethics and semantics in physician-assisted suicide laws

The legalization of physician-assisted suicide (PAS) in various U.S. states draws into question the interpretation of the cardinal virtues of medicine, including beneficence, non-maleficence, autonomy, and justice. Interestingly, there seems to be a fifth virtue of impor-tance to the PAS debate: dignity. Four of ten state stat-utes legalizing PAS are titled the Death with Dignity Act (see Table 1). This begs the question: how do, and how should, states—especially those that may legalize PAS in the future—refer to PAS in their legislation?
