Une enquête danoise montre un taux de mortalité accru chez les parents ayant perdu un de leurs enfants. Cette élévation est particulièrement importante au cours des trois années suivant la mort de l'enfant. Elle est plus importante chez les mères que chez les pères. Le décès peut avoir une cause naturelle ou non. Les chercheurs ont observé, entre 1980 et 1996, 21 062 parents au Danemark.
