Les auteurs ont examiné les certificats de décès de personnes démentes âgées de 65 ans et plus en Belgique, aux Pays-Bas, en Angleterre, en Écosse et au Pays de Galles. Ils ont mis en évidence le fait que les lieux de décès dépendent de l'âge, du sexe, de la disponibilité des lits en hôpitaux et en maisons de retraite et des particularités nationales. Cependant dans tous les pays, la majorité des patients déments meurt en établissements de long séjour.
