La douleur est un phénomène complexe difficilement mesurable car subjectif. L'auto-évaluation par le patient est de plus en plus reconnue comme la mesure la plus exacte. Cependant, cette auto-évaluation n'est pas toujours acceptée par les infirmières, ou celles-ci n'utilisent pas efficacement les outils contre la douleur. Le problème d'attitude est le plus difficile à résoudre. Les auteurs suggèrent que les infirmières reçoivent une formation sur le traitement de la douleur le plus tôt possible dans leurs études. Deux tableaux sont inclus, l'un sur les facteurs à prendre en compte dans l'évaluation de la douleur, l'autre les objectifs d'un cursus de formation.
