Palliative care for patients with cancer : ASCO guideline clinical insights

Updated evidence-based recommendations were developed to reflect new evidence published since the 2016 guideline, address new research questions, and further clarify the role of palliative care in oncology. 1 The update provides oncology clinicians and researchers, patients, family caregivers, and policymakers with recommendations regarding how and when to integrate palliative care for patients with cancer into existing structures and processes of care. Specifically, oncology clinicians should refer patients with advanced solid tumors and hematologic malignancies to specialized interdisciplinary palliative care teams that provide in-patient and outpatient care early in the course of disease, alongside active cancer treatment. Among patients with cancer with unaddressed physical, psychosocial, or spiritual distress, cancer care programs should provide dedicated palliative care services to complement existing or emerging supportive care interventions. Patients with advanced cancer should have early palliative care involvement, especially for patients with uncontrolled symptoms and/or quality-of-life concerns. 1 This article discusses selected recommendations, see Figure 1; all recommendations are provided in the full guideline. 1
