« The whole blogosphere is watching » ou la prise d’assaut du parti démocrate par la blogosphère libérale

Since 2004 and Howard Dean’s pioneering use of the Internet during his primary campaign, the liberal blogosphere has grown dramatically. Today, its readership rivals that of the sites run by traditional newspapers. Two of its most famous members, Markos Moulitsas and Jerome Armstrong, have explained in their 2006 pamphlet ‘Crashing the Gate: Netroots, Grassroots, and the Rise of People-Powered Politics’ how blogs can have a real impact on American political life. They conceive the blogosphere as a paradigm-changing tool which can redefine political activism in the United States. This new ‘netroots’ activism aims at reforming what they see as a deeply-flawed Democratic Party, from its base up. This attempt at decentralizing and democratizing American politics gained a lot of credibility when many of the centrist candidates supported by the blogosphere during the 2006 midterm elections won. Their victory helped the Democratic Party obtain a majority in Congress for the first time since 1994. Such efforts help discredit most of the clichés depicting bloggers as amateurish leftists bound to disappear from America’s political landscape very soon.
