Wine in Spain, healthy nourishment with therapeutic benefits, was in the past not only considered as a vigorous nutrient but also as a healthy product provided that it was drunk in moderation. Common people had this belief as well as the illustrious elite and doctors. However, in the old times, they used to consider as moderate, amounts of alcohol that nowadays would be excessive. Home-made wine prepared from grapes grown in one’s own vineyards was considered especially healthy. Countrymen used to put more effort into making better wine, less adulterated and therefore healthier when it was used for family consumption. In order to make a good healthy wine it needed to fulfil certain inherent prerequisites and have specific qualities such as clearness and purity. Hygienists used to consider vintage wines as healthy provided that they were well prepared. Their level of acidity was also very important. Regarding alcoholic graduation, doctors used to recommend light wines.
