International audience. Sildenafil citrate is a phosphodiesterase 5-selective inhibitor used successfully in treating erectile dysfunction. High doses of sildenafil can inhibit myometrial contractions. However, no study has demonstrated a role for phosphodiesterase 5 in myometrial contractility. No clinical trial using sildenafil to promote uterine relaxation should be initiated based on the currently available data.
