National audience. A bioactive material is a material able to induce specific biological activity and stimulate a beneficial response from the host tissue. Bioactive glasses (BAG) are biomaterials with the ability to form an hydroxyapatite layer when placed in contact with mineralized tissues. The initial composition of BAG is 45% SiO2 - 24.5% Na2O - 24.5% CaO - 6% P2O5. The proportion of oxides can be modified in order to enhance the biocompatibility, bioactivity and the textural properties of the particles. Pores increase the developed surface area and consequently the particules bioactivity. There is also the possibility to integrate drugs, protein or growth factors inside pores.Other parameters can be modified such as size or chemical composition. In the context of non/minimally invasive dentristry and tissue preservation, bioactive glasses could be valuable for new clinical applications.
