International audience. Although an impressive knowledge on the early stages of the rhizobium–legume symbiosis has accumulated in the past decades, the latest stages, especially nodule senescence, remain poorly understood. Nitric oxide (NO), a ubiquitous gas signaling molecule, has been described as a potential signal triggering developmental as well as stress-induced nodule senescence. Proteins involved in NO synthesis and degradation inside the nodule are varied and some likely remain to be identified. Nevertheless, it is now well established that both partners, plant and rhizobia, contribute to NO homeostasis in the nodule. The way(s) NO influences nodule senescence is still puzzling; NO might have a direct negative effect on proteins essential for nitrogen fixation (i.e. nitrogenase) but it might also have more subtle signaling role(s) via specific gene regulation and/or post-translational modifications of plant and bacterial proteins. These different tracks will be discussed in this review.
