An educational kit for effective prevention and management of energy deficit in dairy cows

International audience. Energy deficit (ED) occurs when energy intake is lower than the animal’s needs at early lactation or later when cow is underfed. Severe ED can alter milk production, reproductive and health performances, and thus the economy of the dairy farm. Despite this, a recent survey showed there is an inappropriate knowledge on ED in the dairy sector (dairy farmers, farmer advisers, etc.). That is why the partners of the Biomarq’lait project, financed by the French Ministry of Agriculture and Food, decided to synthesise current knowledge on the ED to provide an educational kit for French agricultural and agronomy students. A survey showed a strong interest of teachers for this topic and enabled the kit to be structured into three materials: a video, three summary sheets, and an evaluation test. The video presents the key points of prevention and management of energy deficit in dairy cows, while the three sheets give more details about the knowledge on ED. The evaluation test is in a fun format and allows students to assess their level of knowledge before and/or after the training session. This kit will be offered to all agricultural and agronomic schools at the start of the 2023-2024 school year.
