The following fake video script was written as a contribution to a particular debate among gay male artists that reached a head (so to speak) with an exhibition called Against Nature sponsored by the Los Angles artist space LACE in January 1988 (an earlier version of this script constituted my catalogue essay). The curatorial concept was inspired by Joris Karl Huysmans’s Against Nature, a satirical nineteenth-century French novel that celebrated artifice and dandyism. With tongue in cheek, it recorded the self-imposed aesthetic exile of Des Essientes, an aesthete languishing from an (unnamed) disease that suspiciously resembled ennui. . Le faux script vidéo qui suit a été écrit pour contribuer à un certain débat parmi des artistes gay, débat qui a atteint son sommet (pour ainsi dire) avec une exposition intitulée Against Nature [Contre nature], au LACE, un artist space de Los Angeles en janvier 1988 (ma contribution au catalogue consistait en une précédente version de ce script). Le projet curatorial s’inspirait d’À rebours de Joris Karl Huysmans, un roman français satirique du XIXe siècle célébrant l’artifice et le dandysme. Avec ironie, il retrace l’exil esthétique que s’est auto-imposé Des Esseintes, un esthète qui se languit d’une maladie (non-nommée) ressemblant suspicieusement à l’ennui.
