International audience. The last decade has witnessed a series of extreme droughts across the globe. The impacts of these droughts have been devastating for the ecosystem and human activities. In this paper we present the assessment of the drought events in the last decade from the remote sensing-based root zone soil moisture anomalies. The root zone soil moisture is obtained from the SMOS surface soil moisture. And the drought index is defined as the monthly anomaly of the root zone soil moisture. Our results show the distribution of droughts over the last decade in various regions across the globe.
