Linear programming, a mathematical tool often used in operational research, enables to complete the selection index approach by imposing constraints on the characters which can not be included in the index (table II). The ensuing global optimization seems to be of interest for the choice of genotypes (table III and fig 1), when the available information simultaneously concerns quantitative traits, and qualitative characters which do not respect the multinormality hypothesis required for their integration in a genotype-on-phenotype regression. . La programmation linéaire, outil mathématique souvent utilisé en recherche opérationnelle, permet de compléter l’approche par index en introduisant des contraintes sur les caractères qui ne peuvent être intégrés dans l’index. L’optimisation globale ainsi permise paraît donc intéressante pour sélectionner des génotypes lorsque l’information disponible concerne à la fois des caractères quantitatifs, et des caractères qualitatifs ne respectant pas les hypothèses de multinormalité nécessaires à leur prise en compte dans une régression géno-phénotypique.
