National audience. On the basis of forest ecosystem studies in France and Germany, the main characteristics of N cycle in mountain forests are drawn: the total N input is often relatively high in comparison to the woody immobilisation and a large part of it is directly taken up by the canopies (TAB. I); nitrification is generally high even in very low pH conditions; N loss in drainage water is high in old coniferous forests and new afforestations on previous heath- or grassland soils (TAB. II). These ecosystems are generally not N-saturated, and the organic pool is in steady state or increasing, even under high input levels, particularly in broadleaved forests. On the contrary, the soil organic N pool of new afforested heath-land decreases. Previous land use and stand history give explanations onto N cycle: for example, old coniferous forests where litter raking has been performed have little loss in drainage water.
