Purpose: To evaluate macular sensitivity and its correlation with visual acuity and Spectral Domain-Optical Coherence Tomography (SD-OCT) in eyes with idiopathic epiretinal membranes (ERM).Methods: Cross sectional case-control series. We included forty nine patients (49 eyes) with idiopathic ERM and twenty-seven healthy patients (27 eyes) as a control group. A measurement of ETDRS best-corrected visual acuity, a microperimetry and a Spectral-Domain Optical Coherence Tomography (SD-OCT) was performed for all patients. Results: Macular sensitivity in the ERM group was significantly lower than in the control group (p< 0.0001). We identified a correlation between macular sensitivity and visual acuity (r=0.589; p<0.0001); macular thickness (r =-0.358; p=0.012); and macular volume (r=-0.354; p=0.013) in the ERM group. These correlations were not found in the control group. Patients with abnormalities of the photoreceptor layer and the outer retina had significantly lower macular sensitivity (p=0.001 and p=0.007, respectively). Conclusions: The combination of OCT and microperimetry may provide a better evaluation of patients with ERM. This may help to identify prognostic factors for functional recovery.
