Diatoms are the major players in the biochemicalcycles of carbon, nitrogen, phosphorus, and siliconwith a strong impact on global climate not only inthe ocean but also in the freshwater environment.In the ocean, they tend to dominate the phytoplanktonassemblage under nutrient-rich conditions;whereas, in freshwater ecosystems, highturbulence and the combination of low temperature/high nutrients favour diatom blooming. Theirfascinating biodiversity with approximately 10,000species has been recently taxonomically revisedgiving evidence that the diatoms form two clades:the Coscinodiscophytina and the Bacillariophytina,the latter containing two subclades Bacillariophyceaeand Mediophyceae; all the more this tremendousspecies diversity evolved during the last250Ma and there is likely no phylogenetic groupin which the evolutionary rate has occurred faster(Medlin and Kaszmarska 2004). Therefore, thediatoms can be considered as one of the mostsuccessful taxonomic groups with respect toevolution and ecology. However, the genetic andphysiological basis why diatoms became soecologically successful is still a matter of debate.
