La dyspnée est un symptôme important et fréquent chez des patients cancéreux au stade avancé. Cet article reprend d'abord des données physiopathologiques, avec des rappels sur la régulation de la respiration au niveau des systèmes respiratoire et nerveux, le tout étant repris sous forme de schéma. La survenue de la dyspnée est reliée à des mécanismes complexes qui sont décrits, ainsi que ses différentes étapes résumées en un schéma explicatif. L'évaluation de ce symptôme présente la recherche des différentes étiologies résumées en un tableau récapitulatif et sa description par les patients. Les méthodes d'évaluation de son intensité sont répertoriées ; elles peuvent être classifiées en deux groupes : étude de l'impact de la dyspnée sur les activités du patient ou étude des perceptions des patients. Une association de différentes méthodologies paraît appropriée pour obtenir une meilleure approche thérapeutique.
