L'auteur, après avoir défini l'accréditation comme un ensemble de critères standards décrivant l'organisation d'une structure de soins palliatifs, aborde la nécessité de tels critères pour l'évaluation ainsi que pour les dangers encourus. Elle recommande d'élaborer des procédures rapidement mesurables et reproductibles, mais qui ne sont pas toujours adaptées aux situations rencontrées. Elle suggère aussi que le financeur du projet devrait choisir l'organisme chargé de l'évaluation.
