Le soutien émotionnel et pratique avant, pendant et après la mort du conjoint est considéré comme important pour aider les personnes âgées endeuillées à accepter leur perte. Cet article étudie les différences liées au sexe dans le soutien offert aux veufs ou veuves âgé(e)s. Un nombre total de quarante-six veuves et de quarante-six veufs ont été questionnés sur leur mariage, sur leur vie qui a suivi immédiatement la mort de leur partenaire ainsi que sur leur vie actuelle. Contrairement à ce qui a été relaté lors d'une précédente recherche, mais en accord avec les croyances des femmes interrogées, les hommes ont reçu un soutien plus formel que les femmes. L'article se termine par une discussion sur de possibles explications et sur quelques recommandations dans la perspective d'une recherche plus approfondie.
