Meeting the needs of older people at the end of life (EOL) is a pressing public health (PH) issue. 1,2 EOL suffering shares the defining characteristics of other PH priorities: large burden, major impact regarding health consequences or costs, and the potential for prevention. 2,3 More than 3 million Americans die annually and most individuals are unlikely to receive the care they need throughout their course of illness. 4,5 Many seriously-ill individuals experience unrelieved physical and psychosocial needs and reports of these distressing symptoms at the EOL are increasing. 6–8 Changing social structures have altered the availability of family caregivers, a vital but often unacknowledged part of the health care system. 9 [Début de l'article]
