International audience. The in-plane field-induced magnetization reversal process in a polycrystalline ultrathin film with perpendicular anisotropy is presented. A simple phenomenological approach which assumes that the cobalt layer is composed of uncoupled patches of different thicknesses is proposed. It explains well the nonreversibility of the H∥ magnetization curves. The effect of the exchange interaction on the effective reduction of the local anisotropy distribution is investigated. Further theoretical works might include realistic change strength between patches and thermal fluctuations.
