International audience. Over the last decade, taking advantage of the small genome size of honey bees(225 Mb) and the fact that males (drones) are haploïd, our research team located atINRAE in Toulouse, France, has built up a large dataset of phased honey beegenomes. However, sample collection requires regular visits to the hives, which canbe an issue for large regional sampling. Therefore, our “Mallaurie'' project aims at testing a potential alternative by directshotgun sequencing of honey samples,. This approach could have several associated advantages : (i)non-lethal sampling, (ii) lower carbon footprints (iii) easy access to a larger diversitygiven the importance of the worldwide market and (iv) access to metagenomic data, such as microbiome, parasites, plants etc.
