National audience. Progressive retinal atrophies in dogs are first explored by thorough clinical examination and complementary examinations when needed. The description of a typical phenotype is a necessary condition to take advantage of genealogies, which include dogs of interest. Although common physical signs are observed, different evolutions should question the clinician on their origins, as comparable fundus appearance does not mean a similar genetic background. The association between an appropriate use of the clinical study and the physiopathological knowledge do permit to plan the strategies through the better genetic approaches (candidate genes, linkage analysis, whole genome sequencing) to identify the genes mutations involved in these diseases. The goal remains to valid and propose genetic diagnostic tests, the results of which should always be used in comparison with clinical findings. The diagnostic procedures are successively described and discussed through examples of retinal degenerative processes in different breeds. © 2021
